Underwater Hockey
Underwater hockey is a fast-paced, physical game where players use a small stick to manoeuvre a puck across the bottom of a usually 2m deep pool into the goal bin. Teams are made up of six players and four substitutes, with players able to interchange at any stage during the game. Players wear a mask, snorkel and fins, which makes the games extremely quick as players race through the water and can continue to watch the game as they surface for air.
Teams work hard to discuss and implement team strategies that allow them to maintain possession, control and momentum in a game where players can’t talk to each other underwater and need to keep popping up to breathe! It’s a fun, fast team sport which is a great workout and a natural extension for anyone who loves the water.

AUWH Committee
Auckland Underwater Hockey (AUWH) is the regional body responsible for promoting, organising, and developing the sport of underwater hockey across the wider Auckland area. Our role is to support players of all ages and skill levels from first-time participants discovering the sport through schools or “have a go” events, to experienced club players and athletes competing on the national and international stage. We work closely with schools, clubs, and representative programmes to provide opportunities for structured competition, skill development, and community engagement. Beyond competition, AUWH is committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages teamwork, fair play, and the unique spirit of underwater hockey.
